Tragedy Strikes

Turn your vision earthward -
'Tis we must lend a hand.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Elizabeth Okello*.  She was the wife of our friend Peter Okello* and mother of five children, ranging in age from five to 16.  The family has been living in a disease infested slum of Nairobi, Kenya, since fleeing their farmland in Uganda after an attack by the Lord's Resistance Army.  EARTHWARD is currently trying to raise funds to relocate them to a safer environment.  Please read the full account of their ordeal.
Elizabeth Okello*
Mrs. Okello* succumbed to Typhoid and Amoebic Dysentry on June 2, while Peter* was in Kisumu, near Lake Victoria, working to build a fence around the property to be their future home.  She had been admitted to the hospital for the second time on May 26.

The particular illnesses with which she was afflicted are rampant in the slum where the family now lives.  As long as Peter* and the children remain there, they too are at risk.  We hope to help this family move to their new home as soon as possible.  Even more immediate needs are food and medical supplies for the family, and funeral-related expenses that come to about US $500.  If you can help with a donation (click here) of any size, it will be greatly appreciated.  Despite their tremendous loss Peter* remains committed and determined to find a better life for his children.  Click here to read about their next steps.

* To protect the privacy of the family concerned, fictitious names are used throughout this website, in reference to all  members of that family.
