Projects of HAN

(Humanist Association of Nigeria; an EARTHWARD affiliate)

We are pleased to have the HAN as one of our EARTHWARD affiliates, and below we describe the projects that HAN (Humanist Association of Nigeria) is working on that fall within EARTHWARD's mission.  At the bottom of the page is information on how you can help.

Nigeria is located on the west coast of Africa, and has just recently elected a civilian Republic government after 16 years of military rule.  Although national law is based on a combination of traditional law and English common law, a few of the northern states do impose Islamic Shariah Law.  Half the population are Muslims, 40% are Christians, and those with indigenous or other beliefs comprise 10%.  More information about Nigeria may be found in the CIA Factbook page about Nigeria.

EARTHWARD has decided to approve funding for two specific projects of HAN.  One is to help the victims of ritual killings. HAN distributes funds to help defray the medical costs and general rehabilitation of victims and their families.  The second is to help pay the legal costs of defending those accused of blasphemy or adultery under Shariah Law.  HAN Secretary Leo Igwe has written an essay describing the problem of ritual killings: Ritual Killing and Pseudoscience in Nigeria.
